In-house course
Advanced Power BI Training, HRDF Claimable — DAX, performance and governance
Two days for teams already publishing Power BI reports, working on their own models: the measures that confuse them, the pages that load slowly, and the rollout that needs rules.
- Duration
- 2 days
- 14 hours
- Delivered
- At your premises
- Including Sarawak and Sabah
- HRDF claim ceiling
- RM21,000
- For 2 days, whole group
Advanced Power BI Training: what your team will be able to do
- Explain filter context and context transition, and predict what a CALCULATE expression will return
- Use iterators such as SUMX and AVERAGEX, and variables, to write measures that are correct and readable
- Build time intelligence for a non-calendar financial year, including rolling and comparison periods
- Replace repeated measure variants with a calculation group where it simplifies the model
- Diagnose slow visuals with Performance Analyzer and fix the model rather than the symptom
- Design and test row-level security, including dynamic rules driven by the signed-in user
- Configure incremental refresh for large tables, and plan gateway and refresh schedules
- Set up a development-to-production process with workspaces and, where licensed, deployment pipelines
Who it is for
- Analysts and BI developers who already build and publish Power BI reports
- Teams whose models have grown slow, fragile or dependent on one person
- Organisations moving from a few reports to a governed, company-wide Power BI service
- Finance and management-reporting teams with financial-year and period-comparison logic
When something else fits better
- Teams new to Power BI — the Microsoft Power BI course is the right starting point
- Candidates preparing specifically for an exam — this is a working course built on your model
- Data-engineering work on warehouses and pipelines outside Power BI itself
About the Advanced Power BI course
This advanced Power BI training is for teams already building reports, and covers the DAX, modelling and governance that keep them fast and trusted — HRDF claimable, at your office.
- There is a stage every Power BI team reaches.
- Reports are in use, managers rely on them, and the model has grown well past what the first course prepared anyone for.
- Some measures return numbers nobody can explain.
- A page takes twenty seconds to load.
- Refreshes run for an hour.
- Every change is made directly in the live workspace, and one person is the only one who dares touch the model.
- None of that is a beginner problem, and a beginner course will not fix it.
- This course picks up where the Power BI course ends.
- Day one is DAX in depth — CALCULATE and filter context properly understood, iterators, variables, time intelligence that handles your financial year, and calculation groups where they remove dozens of near-identical measures — followed by modelling for performance: star schema discipline, relationships and cardinality, aggregations, and measuring what is slow with Performance Analyzer.
- Day two is running Power BI as a service the business depends on: row-level security, incremental refresh, gateways, workspaces, deployment pipelines and report design standards that hold across many authors.
- The exercises are built on a copy of your own model, supplied during scoping.
- The group leaves with specific measures fixed, specific pages faster, and a written set of rules for how reports are built, tested and published from now on.
Cost and funding
Advanced Power BI Training price and HRDF claim
In-house training is priced per group, not per person, and HRDF reimburses it per group too — up to RM10,500 per full day where the provider and course are registered and your company applies before the training. Put in your numbers to see what your levy covers.
The levy ledger
What your company already contributes, what this costs, and what is at risk if nobody claims.
Your monthly levy
RM3,000
1% of monthly wages — compulsory
HRDF reimburses up to
RM21,000
About RM1,400 per person at 15 people
At risk of forfeiture
RM62,000
Two years of contributions above the RM10,000 floor, if no claim is made
At your contribution rate, the claimable ceiling for this course is roughly 7.0 months of levy — money already leaving the payroll every month whether it is used or not.

An estimate, not advice. Levy rates and the forfeiture rule are HRDF’s, read 10 September 2026; the reimbursement ceiling is from HRDF’s Allowable Cost Matrix (January 2026 version), read 25 September 2026. Your actual balance depends on your claim history. Confirm your position with HRDF.
Advanced Power BI Training course outline
Indicative. The final agenda is built from your team’s own files and processes during scoping, and adjusted to the group’s level from a short skills check before the course.
01Day 1 morning — DAX that behaves the way you expect
- · Row context, filter context and context transition, shown on your own measures
- · CALCULATE in depth: filter arguments, ALL, ALLEXCEPT, REMOVEFILTERS and KEEPFILTERS
- · Iterators — SUMX, AVERAGEX, RANKX — and when they cost performance
- · Variables for readability, debugging and speed
- · Time intelligence on a proper date table, including a financial year that does not start in January
- · Calculation groups built in Power BI Desktop, and when they are worth the added complexity
02Day 1 afternoon — Modelling for performance
- · Star schema discipline: splitting wide tables into facts and dimensions
- · Relationships, cardinality, cross-filter direction and the cost of bidirectional filters
- · Reducing model size: removing columns, choosing data types, avoiding high-cardinality keys
- · Import, DirectQuery and composite models, and where aggregations help
- · Performance Analyzer in Desktop, and reading query timings with the free DAX Studio tool
03Day 2 morning — Security and refresh
- · Row-level security: static roles, dynamic rules using the signed-in user, and testing with View as
- · Where security is defined in Desktop and where users are assigned in the service
- · Incremental refresh policies for large fact tables, and what your licensing supports
- · On-premises data gateways, scheduled refresh and diagnosing a failed refresh
04Day 2 afternoon — Deployment and governance
- · Workspace design: development, test and production, and who has which role
- · Deployment pipelines and the licensing they need, or a manual promotion process where they are not available
- · Shared semantic models, certified and promoted content, and apps for distribution
- · A report design standard: themes, page templates, naming and measure folders
- · A checklist for publishing a change without breaking what managers already use

Advanced Power BI Training: frequently asked questions
›How is this different from the Power BI course?
The Power BI course takes a team from raw data to a first published report: Power Query, a first data model, core DAX measures and sharing. This course assumes all of that is in daily use and goes into what breaks at scale — complex DAX, performance, security, refresh and deployment.
If some of your group have not yet published a report, run the Power BI course first. The pre-course skills check makes that call rather than guesswork.
›Which features depend on our Power BI licensing?
Several of the day-two topics do. Microsoft documents incremental refresh as supported for Power BI Pro, Premium Per User, Premium and Embedded models, while the real-time DirectQuery portion of a hybrid table needs Premium, Premium Per User or Embedded. Deployment pipelines assign a workspace to each stage, and those workspaces must sit on a Premium Per User, Premium or Fabric capacity rather than on Pro alone.
Licensing changes often, so we check what your tenant has at scoping and build the deployment module around it. Where pipelines are not available, the course sets up a manual development-to-production process that achieves most of the same control.
›Can we bring our slow or broken reports?
Yes — that is the most useful way to run it. Send a copy of the model, or a masked version with the same structure, during scoping. The trainer reviews it beforehand and the exercises are built around its actual problems, so the course ends with those measures and pages fixed.
›Does this prepare our team for the PL-300 exam?
It goes deeper than much of the PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst syllabus in modelling and DAX, but it is a working course rather than exam preparation. The exam is booked separately through Microsoft’s exam provider.
›Is Advanced Power BI training HRDF claimable?
Yes, where the training provider and the specific course are registered with HRDF and the employer applies for the grant early enough for it to be approved at least 14 days before the training starts. The January 2026 cost matrix caps the in-house course fee at RM10,500 per group per full day, with at least 2 trainees, and prorates the cap below 5 trainees.
Advanced groups are often small, so the proration matters: we set out the claimable ceiling for your group size at scoping.
›Do participants need admin rights in our Power BI tenant?
Not for most of the course. They need Power BI Desktop installed and a workspace they can publish to. The security, gateway and deployment topics go further if a tenant or workspace administrator attends for day two, so we suggest inviting them.
