Excel VBA Course, HRDF Claimable — automate the work, not just record it
Two days for confident Excel users who want to write the macros themselves, built on the reports your team repeats every week.
- Duration
- 2 days
- 14 hours
- Delivered
- At your premises
- Including Sarawak and Sabah
- HRDF claim ceiling
- RM21,000
- For 2 days, whole group
Excel VBA Course: what your team will be able to do
- Record a macro, read the code it produces, and rewrite it so it works on data of any size
- Find their way around the VBA editor: modules, the Immediate window, the Object Browser and help
- Declare variables with the right data types, and use Option Explicit to catch mistakes early
- Control flow with If, Select Case, For Next, For Each and Do loops
- Refer to ranges, sheets and workbooks reliably, without hard-coded addresses
- Build a simple UserForm that validates what users type before it reaches the sheet
- Handle errors, step through code with breakpoints and fix a macro someone else wrote
- Automate a real report or file consolidation, and save, sign and share it safely
Who it is for
- Finance, reporting and operations staff who already work confidently with formulas and PivotTables
- Teams whose monthly process involves opening many files and copying between them
- Staff who have inherited macro-enabled workbooks and need to maintain them
- Power users who have outgrown the macro recorder
When something else fits better
- Groups still building core Excel skills — start with Microsoft Excel, Basic to Advanced
- Teams whose reports live in Excel for the web or on Mac-only machines — VBA is a desktop Excel skill
- Processes that are mainly import-and-clean, which Power Query handles with less code — see Advanced Excel
About the Excel VBA & Macros course
This Excel VBA course teaches people who already know Excel to write macros that keep working — two HRDF claimable days at your office, on your own reports.
- Most teams meet macros through the recorder.
- It captures a sequence of clicks, plays it back, and works until the report has one more row, a different sheet name or a new month in the file name — and then it breaks, and nobody knows how to fix it.
- Recorded code is written for the exact workbook it was recorded on.
- Making it survive real data means being able to read and write VBA, the language underneath.
- This course teaches that language to people who are not programmers.
- It starts from the recorder, because that is the fastest way to see what VBA looks like, and then moves to writing procedures by hand: variables, loops and decisions; working with ranges, sheets and whole workbooks; a simple UserForm for data entry; and error handling so a macro fails politely instead of stopping at a yellow line.
- The second day applies all of it to the jobs that justify learning VBA in the first place — consolidating files from a folder, splitting a master list into one workbook per branch, and producing a formatted report with one button.
- It is deliberately different from the Advanced Excel course, which automates with Power Query and Power Pivot and only records macros.
- Part of this course is judgement: some jobs are better done in Power Query, and some belong in Power Automate or Office Scripts rather than in a macro on one person’s laptop.
- Participants leave knowing which tool fits which job, and with at least one of their own processes automated.
Cost and funding
Excel VBA Course price and HRDF claim
In-house training is priced per group, not per person, and HRDF reimburses it per group too — up to RM10,500 per full day where the provider and course are registered and your company applies before the training. Put in your numbers to see what your levy covers.
The levy ledger
What your company already contributes, what this costs, and what is at risk if nobody claims.
Your monthly levy
RM3,000
1% of monthly wages — compulsory
HRDF reimburses up to
RM21,000
About RM1,400 per person at 15 people
At risk of forfeiture
RM62,000
Two years of contributions above the RM10,000 floor, if no claim is made
At your contribution rate, the claimable ceiling for this course is roughly 7.0 months of levy — money already leaving the payroll every month whether it is used or not.

Excel VBA Course course outline
Indicative. The final agenda is built from your team’s own files and processes during scoping, and adjusted to the group’s level from a short skills check before the course.
01Day 1 morning — From recorder to editor
- · Enabling the Developer tab, and saving as a macro-enabled workbook (.xlsm)
- · Recording a macro with absolute and relative references, and reading what was recorded
- · The VBA editor: project explorer, modules, properties and the Immediate window
- · Sub procedures, comments and indentation, and cleaning up recorded code
- · Personal Macro Workbook for macros you want in every file
02Day 1 afternoon — The language
- · Variables, data types, constants and Option Explicit
- · Decisions with If…Then…Else and Select Case
- · Loops: For Next, For Each over cells and sheets, Do While and Do Until
- · MsgBox and InputBox for simple interaction with the user
- · Writing a Function procedure that can be used in a worksheet formula
03Day 2 morning — Ranges, sheets and workbooks
- · Range, Cells, Offset, Resize and CurrentRegion; finding the last row properly
- · Adding, renaming, copying and deleting sheets in code
- · Opening, looping through and closing every workbook in a folder
- · Consolidating monthly or branch files into one master table
- · Splitting a master list into one workbook per region or salesperson
04Day 2 afternoon — UserForms, errors and safe sharing
- · Designing a UserForm with text boxes, combo boxes and buttons
- · Validating input and writing it to the next empty row of a table
- · On Error handling, breakpoints, stepping through code and the Locals window
- · Macro security: trust settings, trusted locations and files blocked because they came from the internet
- · Assigning macros to buttons, documenting the code and handing it over
05Throughout — Choosing the right tool
- · When Power Query does the same job with no code and refreshes more safely
- · When Power Automate or Office Scripts suit a process that runs in the cloud or on a schedule
- · When VBA is still the right answer: desktop-only tasks, UserForms and file handling

Excel VBA Course: frequently asked questions
›How is this different from the Advanced Excel course?
Advanced Excel automates with Power Query, Power Pivot and dynamic formulas, and covers macros only as far as recording and light editing. This course is about writing VBA: variables, loops, UserForms, error handling and code that works across many files.
If your monthly pain is importing and cleaning the same exports, Advanced Excel is the better buy. If it is opening dozens of workbooks, splitting files, or building a data-entry form, this is the course. The pre-course skills check tells us which.
›Do participants need programming experience?
No. The course is written for Excel users who have never programmed. What they do need is to be comfortable in Excel itself — formulas, Tables and PivotTables — because every macro they write acts on a workbook they must already understand.
›When should we use Power Query or Power Automate instead of VBA?
Power Query is the better tool when the job is importing, cleaning and combining data: it needs no code, and a new month is a refresh. Power Automate, together with Office Scripts in Excel, suits processes that should run in the cloud, on a schedule, or when an email arrives, without anyone opening a file.
VBA remains the right answer for desktop tasks such as UserForms, file and folder handling, and formatting-heavy reports. The course covers all three options so the team picks deliberately rather than by habit.
›Which Excel version do we need?
Excel for Windows, desktop version — Microsoft 365 or a recent perpetual version. VBA macros cannot be created, run or edited in Excel for the web, although a macro-enabled workbook can still be opened there.
If your company has locked down macro settings, involve IT during scoping. Office also blocks macros in files downloaded from the internet or received by email until the file is unblocked or placed in a trusted location, and the course explains how to work within that safely.
›Is Excel VBA training HRDF claimable?
Yes, where the training provider and the specific course are registered with HRDF and the employer applies for the grant early enough for it to be approved at least 14 days before the training starts. Under HRDF’s January 2026 cost matrix, the in-house course fee is capped at RM10,500 per group per full day, not per person.
We confirm the registration position for your dates during scoping, before you commit.
›Will the team automate one of our real reports?
That is the plan for the second afternoon. Send the files and the steps someone follows today, anonymised if necessary, and the exercises are built on them. The group writes the macro themselves, so the people who use it can also maintain it.
