Excel Training Penang, HRDF Claimable — Excel and Power BI at your plant or office
Excel and Power BI for production, quality and supply-chain teams in Penang, taught on the exports your lines already produce.
Covering George Town, Bayan Lepas, Batu Maung, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai and Kulim.
Excel training in Penang has to fit around shifts and production, so it runs at your plant or office in full or half days — and it is HRDF claimable.
- Penang’s working economy is shaped by manufacturing.
- The Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone, established in the 1970s, is described by MIDA as home to multinational companies in electronics and semiconductors, and much of the office work around those plants is reporting: yields, rejects, downtime, supplier deliveries, and the weekly numbers that go to a regional or global head office.
- In-house training brings the trainer to your plant or office in Penang, on the island or on the mainland, and builds the course on the files your teams actually work with — machine and MES exports, quality logs, shipment schedules.
- The aim is not a certificate on the wall; it is a weekly report that takes minutes rather than a day, and a production dashboard people trust.
Excel training for reporting from the Penang production floor
The raw material for most reporting in a Penang plant is an export: a CSV from the manufacturing execution system, a download from the test equipment, a quality log kept by each shift. These files are wide, inconsistent and arrive every day. Excel training for engineers and planners here starts with getting such exports into shape — Tables, text and date clean-up, and Power Query to do it the same way every time.
From there the course moves to the questions a production meeting asks: yield by line and by shift, reject codes by part number, downtime by cause, and trends across weeks. PivotTables and charts answer them in Excel; Power BI puts the same answers on a shared operations dashboard that refreshes from the source, so the morning meeting in Penang looks at one version of the numbers instead of three.
Training around shifts
Production, quality and maintenance staff in Penang often work shifts, and releasing a whole team for two consecutive full days can leave a line without cover. A common answer is half-day sessions — the same content, delivered in blocks of up to four hours — scheduled so that each shift can attend without overtime, or two batches on the same day covering morning and afternoon shifts.
Office-based teams such as finance, procurement and planning can take the standard two-day format. Mixing the two in one programme is normal: engineers on half days, office staff on full days, each group working on its own data.
What HRDF covers for a Penang course
Where the provider and course are registered with HRDF and the grant is applied for before training starts, an in-house course is claimable up to RM10,500 per group per full day and RM6,000 per group per half day under the January 2026 Allowable Cost Matrix. The half-day ceiling is what makes the shift-friendly format above claimable.
Small specialist groups are common in Penang — four process engineers who need Power BI, say. In-house training is allowed from 2 trainees, but below 5 the fee cap is prorated, so a two-day course for four people is capped at RM16,800 rather than RM21,000. The matrix also allows airfare for “external trainers from other towns”, and a daily allowance of up to RM500 where the trainer travels 100km or more.
Excel training in Penang: island, mainland and just across the border
Courses run at your premises on either side of the Penang Strait. Groups with staff at more than one site choose whether to bring people to one venue or run a batch at each.
| Where your team is | How it is arranged |
|---|---|
| Bayan Lepas, Batu Maung | At your plant’s training room |
| George Town | At your office or a nearby venue |
| Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai | At your premises, or combined with an island batch |
| Kulim, Kedah (nearby) | At your premises; covered from Penang |
Excel and Power BI training for reporting to a regional or global head office
Many Penang operations report upward to a head office elsewhere in Asia, Europe or the United States. That shapes the training: templates are often prescribed by the parent, Power BI may live in a tenant run by the group’s IT function, and licences are allocated centrally. Before a Power BI course we confirm what participants can actually do in their tenant — publish, share, schedule refreshes — so nobody learns a feature they are not allowed to use.
Where the head-office template is fixed, the course focuses on feeding it reliably: building the Penang side of the process so that the numbers dropped into the parent’s workbook come from a query rather than a copy and paste.
It also helps with audits. A Penang process that pulls its figures through a documented query can be walked through line by line when the group’s finance or quality auditors ask where a number came from.

Excel Training Penang: frequently asked questions
›Can the training run inside our plant in Bayan Lepas?
Yes, in a training or meeting room at your site. Participants need laptops with Excel or Power BI Desktop installed; if your IT policy restricts installations, raise it at scoping so it is sorted before the first day.
›Can a course be split around production shifts?
Yes. The content can be delivered as half days of up to four hours so that each shift attends in its own time. HRDF caps a half day at RM6,000 per group.
›Our Power BI tenant is managed by our regional head office. Does that matter?
It affects what the course can include. Desktop report building works regardless; publishing and sharing depend on the licences and permissions your group grants. We check that at scoping and adjust the outline.
›Our plant is in Kulim. Is that covered?
Yes. Kulim is in Kedah but a short drive from the Penang mainland, and courses there are arranged in the same way as in Seberang Perai.
›Our production data is confidential. How is it used in the course?
The exercises run on your premises, on your own laptops, so the files do not leave the site. Where even that is too sensitive, we agree at scoping on an extract with part numbers or customer names masked, which keeps the structure of the real data without exposing it.
