Excel Training Miri, HRDF Claimable — Excel and Microsoft Project at your office or base
Excel, Power BI and Microsoft Project for the contractors and service companies of northern Sarawak, taught on your own timesheets, rate schedules and plans.
Covering Miri, Lutong, Bintulu, Marudi and Limbang.
Excel training in Miri runs at your office or base and is HRDF claimable, with the trainer travelling north so your team does not have to.
- Miri is an oil town, and has been for more than a century.
- The Grand Old Lady on Canada Hill — now Power Hill — was Sarawak’s first oil well, built in 1910 and producing until 1972, according to the Sarawak Museum Department, which runs the Petroleum Museum beside it.
- The industry that grew from it still shapes the city’s offices: contractors, service companies, engineering firms and suppliers whose working lives run on timesheets, rate schedules, purchase orders and project plans.
- In-house training brings the trainer to Miri and builds the course on that material.
- The whole team trains together at your office, base or a venue in the city, and the exercises are your own reports rather than generic samples.
- The same arrangement serves Lutong, Marudi and Limbang, and Bintulu down the coast.
Excel training for reporting in Miri’s oil and gas supply chain
A contractor in Miri reports to its client as much as to its own management. Manhours by discipline, HSE statistics, progress against work orders, invoices built from contract rates — each goes out on a schedule and each is checked by someone on the other side. Excel training for these teams puts the emphasis on getting that right the first time: rate lookups with XLOOKUP against the contract schedule, data validation so timesheets are entered one way, and PivotTables that reconcile manhours to invoices.
Where the same monthly pack is rebuilt by hand, Advanced Excel with Power Query or Power BI turns it into a refresh. Where a company’s work is scheduled — maintenance campaigns, fabrication jobs, turnarounds — Microsoft Project training covers building a realistic schedule, assigning resources and reporting progress in the format the client asks for.
Excel training in Miri, planned around rotations and site work
Many Miri employers have staff who work rotation or spend long periods at site, and the training date has to fit around that. Scoping starts with the roster: which people are onshore in which weeks, and whether one course can catch them all or two short batches work better.
Office-based teams — planning, finance, contracts, procurement and HSE reporting — are the usual core of a group, with site supervisors joining when they are on their onshore days. Because the course is in-house, the content can reflect both: the office staff build the reports, the supervisors learn to supply clean data into them.
For teams in Miri whose rosters cannot be aligned at all, the course can run as two short batches a few weeks apart, with the same outline, so people on opposite rotations still learn one shared way of working.
What HRDF covers when the trainer flies to Miri
Where the provider and course are registered with HRDF and the grant is applied for before training starts, an in-house course is claimable up to RM10,500 per group per full day under the January 2026 Allowable Cost Matrix. The matrix states that “external trainers from other towns … will be allowed to claim for airfare”, and the airfare covers airport tax, the administrative fee and fuel surcharge.
Miri is far more than 100km from Kuching or the Peninsula, so the trainer’s daily allowance falls in the higher band — up to RM500 a day, or the actual rate paid if lower. SST on the course fee is also claimable, provided the total stays within the maximum claimable amount.
Training across northern Sarawak
Courses run at your premises wherever your people are. Companies with staff in both Miri and Bintulu can take one trip with a batch in each town, each counted as its own group.
| Where your team is | How it is arranged |
|---|---|
| Miri city, Lutong | At your office, base or a Miri venue |
| Bintulu | At your premises, or a batch on the same trip |
| Marudi | At your premises, or combined with a Miri batch |
| Limbang | At your premises; trainer travel quoted separately |
Miri and Bintulu in one trip
Bintulu is home to the PETRONAS LNG Complex, which PETRONAS describes as one of the world’s largest LNG production facilities in a single location, and a share of Miri’s contractors and suppliers work across both towns. A single trip with a batch in each keeps the trainer’s airfare to one return journey while every group trains close to its own office.
Teams in Kuching or the southern half of the state are covered on the Kuching page; this page is for employers whose people are in the north.

Excel Training Miri: frequently asked questions
›Can Excel training be held at our office or base in Miri?
Yes. Send the topic, the number of people and the weeks that suit your roster. The trainer delivers at your premises, and each participant works on a laptop with the software installed.
›Some of our people work rotation. How are the dates chosen?
From your roster. We look at who is onshore when and propose either one course that catches most of the team or two shorter batches, so nobody is trained from a phone at site.
›Is Microsoft Project training available in Miri?
Yes, in-house. The course covers building a schedule, resources, baselines and progress reporting, using a real campaign or project of yours as the worked example.
›Can our Miri and Bintulu staff be trained on one trip?
Yes. A batch in Miri and a batch in Bintulu on consecutive days share one flight for the trainer, and HRDF treats the Miri group and the Bintulu group separately, each with its own course-fee ceiling.
›Can the course follow the reporting format our client requires?
Yes. Send a blank copy of the client’s template at scoping and the exercises are built to produce it — the timesheet summary, manhour report or progress format your Miri team actually submits — so the course ends with a working version of the real thing.
