Excel Training Sandakan, HRDF Claimable — at your office, estate or mill
Excel and Power BI for plantation, mill, port and trading teams on Sabah’s east coast, taught on the records you keep every day.
Covering Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Semporna.
Excel training in Sandakan runs at your office, estate or mill on Sabah’s east coast, and is HRDF claimable.
- Sandakan was the capital of British North Borneo until 1947 and remains a commercial centre for Sabah’s east coast.
- Britannica notes the port grew on timber and jungle produce, that its harbour became the outlet for Sabah’s timber trade, and that large oil-palm and cocoa estates were established in the area.
- Much of the office work around it today still follows that pattern: estate and mill records, shipping documents, and the regional offices that pull them together.
- In-house training brings the trainer to Sandakan, or to Lahad Datu, Tawau or wherever your people are, and builds the course on your own records.
- The course runs on dates that fit the estate and mill calendar, and nobody has to fly out of Sabah to attend.
Excel training for Sandakan estate and mill records
An estate generates data every day: crop by block and harvester, rainfall, fertiliser applied, labour and equipment. A mill adds intake, extraction and dispatch. In many operations around Sandakan and Lahad Datu that data is typed into spreadsheets by clerks and passed upward, and the quality of every report above depends on how it is entered.
Excel training for these teams starts at the entry point: Tables, drop-down lists and data validation so each clerk records a block or grade one way, and simple checks that catch an impossible figure before it travels. For the managers and analysts above them, PivotTables summarise crop by division and month, and Power BI puts yield and output trends in front of the people deciding on the next round of work.
Excel training in Sandakan: bringing estate staff into town
Some east-coast employers prefer to bring estate and mill staff into Sandakan or Lahad Datu for training, so the course runs in a proper room with reliable power and connectivity. That is a real cost to plan for, and HRDF recognises it.
The January 2026 Allowable Cost Matrix allows a daily allowance for trainees as well as trainers: up to RM250 a day where the journey is under 100km one way, and up to RM500 at 100km or more, or the actual rate paid if lower. A meal allowance of up to RM100 per trainee per day is also claimable. For staff travelling into Sandakan from a distant estate, those lines change the arithmetic of a central course.
What HRDF covers for an east-coast programme
Where the provider and course are registered with HRDF and the grant is applied for before training starts, an in-house course is claimable up to RM10,500 per group per full day. The matrix states that “external trainers from other towns … will be allowed to claim for airfare”, which covers the trainer’s flight to Sandakan or Tawau.
Each batch is its own group. A programme of three two-day batches — Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau, with five or more in each — carries a combined course-fee ceiling of RM63,000. Batches below 5 trainees are prorated, so a two-day batch of three is capped at RM12,600; combining small estate teams into one batch keeps each group above that line.
Training along the east coast
Courses run at your premises or a venue in the nearest town. Companies with operations along the coast can take consecutive batches on one trip, so the trainer travels between towns and your staff stay close to work.
| Where your team is | How it is arranged |
|---|---|
| Sandakan | At your office or a Sandakan venue |
| Kinabatangan estates and mills | At a mill training room, or staff travel into Sandakan |
| Lahad Datu | At your premises, as a batch on the same trip |
| Tawau, Semporna | At your premises, as a batch on the same trip |
Excel training for Sandakan ports, trading and downstream processing
Beyond the estates, the east coast runs on moving product. Sandakan’s harbour and trading houses handle shipments and stock; in Lahad Datu, the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster was set up by the Sabah State Government in 2005, according to MIDA, to develop downstream palm oil processing. Both mean shipping schedules, stock registers and sales contracts held in Excel.
For these teams in Sandakan and Lahad Datu, the useful course is lookups and PivotTables over shipment and contract records, followed by Power Query where several exports need combining each month. Companies whose head office is in Kota Kinabalu are covered on that page; this one is for teams based on the east coast.

Excel Training Sandakan: frequently asked questions
›Can the training be held in Sandakan rather than Kota Kinabalu?
Yes. The trainer comes to Sandakan and delivers at your office, mill or a venue in town. There is no need for east-coast staff to travel to the west coast.
›Our estate clerks have limited computer experience. Is the course suitable?
Yes, if the scoping says so. A short skills check goes to participants beforehand, and a group of clerks can start from entering data correctly rather than from formulas. Delivery in Bahasa Melayu can be requested; the software menus stay in English.
›Can one trip cover Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau?
Yes. The trainer moves down the coast — Sandakan first, then Lahad Datu, then Tawau — with a batch in each town on consecutive days. Every town’s batch is claimed as a separate group, and one airfare covers the whole circuit.
›Can estate staff claim an allowance for travelling in to Sandakan?
The Allowable Cost Matrix allows a daily allowance for trainees: up to RM250 under 100km one way and up to RM500 at 100km or more, or the actual rate paid if lower, plus a meal allowance of up to RM100 per trainee per day.
›Which course suits a regional office in Sandakan?
For a regional office that receives returns from several estates or mills, Advanced Excel with Power Query is the usual fit, because it turns the monthly combining of files into a refresh. Where managers need to see the same figures across the region, Power BI follows.
