Microsoft Office Specialist certification — the MOS Excel exams, and who actually needs them
A 50-minute, hands-on exam taken inside Excel itself, delivered through Certiport’s testing centres. Useful for some people; not what most teams need.

Microsoft Office Specialist certification is the exam-based credential for Excel and the other Office apps, and employers in Malaysia mostly meet it when hiring or training graduates.
- Microsoft Office Specialist, or MOS, is Microsoft’s certification for the Office applications themselves — Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- It is delivered by Certiport rather than through the Pearson VUE route used for Microsoft’s role-based exams such as PL-300, and the exam is taken live inside the application: the candidate performs tasks in Excel rather than answering questions about it.

The current Excel exams
For the Microsoft 365 Apps version of Excel there are two main levels, each earned with a single exam. Microsoft suggests about 150 hours of instruction and hands-on experience for either.

Microsoft Office Specialist combined titles, and the newer job-specific exams
MOS also has umbrella titles. Microsoft Office Specialist: Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps) requires passing three exams in different applications, at least one of them a Microsoft 365 Apps exam — Excel, Word and PowerPoint, for example. Certiport describes the Expert title as the Associate certification plus two expert-level exams, such as Excel Expert and Word Expert.
Certiport now also lists Excel certifications aimed at particular jobs: Excel for Accounting Associate, Excel for Business Finance Associate and Excel for Operational Management Associate. Note that Certiport describes the accounting exam as based on GAAP, the US accounting standards, which matters for a Malaysian finance team working to MFRS.
How candidates in Malaysia sit the Microsoft Office Specialist exam
Microsoft’s scheduling page directs MOS candidates to “Schedule with Certiport”. Exams run at Certiport Authorized Testing Centers (CATCs), which Certiport describes as independently owned and operated; many are at colleges and universities, and Certiport’s locator lists those that accept walk-in candidates. Certiport’s at-home option for individuals is listed as available inside the United States only, so for a candidate in Malaysia the practical route is a testing centre.
Each exam lasts 50 minutes. Unlike Microsoft’s role-based exams, MOS exams allow no unscheduled breaks and no access to Microsoft’s documentation during the test.
What Microsoft Office Specialist certification costs, and how long it lasts
There is no single published Malaysian price. Microsoft’s certification pages say the price depends on the country where the exam is proctored, and for candidates outside the United States Certiport says to contact the Certiport Solution Provider in your area for pricing. Certiport also notes that testing centres may charge a proctoring fee, and that fees vary. So the real answer to “MOS certification cost” is a quote from the testing centre or local provider, and it is worth asking whether a retake is included.
MOS certifications earned from 23 September 2025 now expire after five years, according to Certiport; certifications earned before that date do not expire. Certiport says a free, online, open-book renewal assessment will be available from March 2030, and that a successful renewal extends the certification by three years.
Where Microsoft Office Specialist certification helps, and what employers need instead
MOS is built for individuals proving themselves: Microsoft’s own candidate profile ends with being “ready to enter the job market”. It is useful for graduates and job-seekers, for roles where a hiring manager asks for proof of Excel skill, and for administrative staff whose career framework recognises it. Because the exam is performed inside Excel, a pass is a fair signal that the person can do the tasks it lists.
What employers usually need is narrower and more specific: a team that can clean its own exports, build a reliable report and stop rebuilding it every month. Certiport does not publish a Malaysian price. It directs candidates outside the United States to the local Certiport Solution Provider for pricing, and testing centres may add a proctoring fee. Ask the testing centre for the total, including any retake.
›Which MOS exam should an experienced Excel user take?
MO-211, Excel Expert, if they already use PivotTables, advanced formulas and macros; MO-210, Excel Associate, otherwise. Microsoft publishes a skills outline for each — reading it against someone’s daily work is the quickest way to choose.
›Can the MOS exam be taken online from home?
Certiport lists its at-home option for individual candidates as available inside the United States only. In Malaysia, plan on sitting it at a Certiport Authorized Testing Center.
›Does MOS certification expire?
For certifications earned from 23 September 2025, yes, after five years, according to Certiport. Certifications earned before that date do not expire. A free renewal assessment is due to open in March 2030.
›Is MOS the same as a Microsoft Certified credential like PL-300?
Both are Microsoft certifications, but they are delivered differently. MOS covers the Office applications and is delivered through Certiport testing centres; role-based certifications such as PL-300 for Power BI are booked through Pearson VUE, online or at a test centre.
