Power BI Certification Malaysia: the PL-300 exam, explained for employers

One exam, booked through Pearson VUE, renewed free each year. What it proves, and when a team needs it rather than the skills alone.

Updated 28 September 2026

Power BI certification in Malaysia means one exam, PL-300, booked through Microsoft — and it is worth knowing what it measures before deciding whether your team needs it.

  • Microsoft’s Power BI certification is called Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, and it is earned by passing one exam, PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst.
  • It is a Microsoft credential, set and scored by Microsoft and taken through Microsoft’s exam provider, Pearson VUE, either online or at a test centre.
  • This guide explains what the exam measures, how someone in Malaysia books and sits it, how renewal works, and — because it is the question an approver asks — when a team actually needs the certificate and when the skills are enough.
  • Everything about the exam comes from Microsoft Learn, read on 28 September 2026.
  • Microsoft updates the exam periodically, so check the study guide before anyone starts preparing.

What PL-300 measures

Microsoft’s study guide describes the candidate as someone who works with business stakeholders, prepares and models data, builds reports, and manages and secures Power BI, and who is “proficient at using Power Query and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX)”. The skills measured as of 20 April 2026 fall into four areas.

Skill areaWeightIncludes
Prepare the data25–30%Connecting to sources, choosing Import, DirectQuery or DirectLake, profiling and cleaning, transforming and loading in Power Query
Model the data25–30%Relationships and cardinality, a date table, DAX measures with CALCULATE and time intelligence, calculation groups, performance tuning
Visualize and analyze the data25–30%Visuals, themes, bookmarks, drillthrough, accessibility, Copilot in reports, trend and outlier analysis
Manage and secure Power BI15–20%Workspaces and apps, scheduled refresh, gateways, row-level security, sensitivity labels
From Microsoft’s “Study guide for Exam PL-300”, skills measured as of 20 April 2026, read 28 September 2026.

How the Power BI certification exam is booked and taken

The exam is scheduled from the certification page on Microsoft Learn, which hands over to Pearson VUE. Microsoft says that in most cases candidates can choose an online proctored exam or a local test centre; for the online option, the candidate runs a system pre-check on their own computer before registering. Microsoft recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work account, because exam records tied to a work account are lost if the person leaves the organisation.

On the day, the candidate has 100 minutes and needs a score of 700 or more to pass. The exam is offered in English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil) and Italian. During associate-level exams Microsoft allows access to its Learn documentation site, with the timer still running. A failed exam can be retaken 24 hours after the first attempt, with longer waits for later attempts.

Before booking, Microsoft offers a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox that shows the question formats.

Cost and renewal

Microsoft states that the exam price is “based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored”, and shows it when booking. We did not read a Malaysian price on Microsoft’s page for this guide, so we do not quote one; the figure shown at booking is the one that applies.

The certification is valid for 12 months. Renewal is free: in the six months before expiry, the holder takes an online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn. Microsoft describes these assessments as shorter than the exam, unproctored and open book, and a pass extends the certification by one year. A lapsed certification is not renewed this way, so it is worth someone owning the reminder.

Where our Power BI courses fit

Our Power BI courses are working courses, built on your own data: connecting and cleaning sources in Power Query, building a model, writing DAX measures, designing reports and publishing them with sensible sharing and refresh. That covers much of the same skill PL-300 tests, because the exam is built around the same job.

They are not exam preparation, and the exam is booked separately through Microsoft’s exam provider. Someone aiming for PL-300 after the course would add Microsoft’s free study material and practice assessment, particularly for the parts of the skills outline their own work does not touch — DirectLake storage mode, calculation groups or paginated reports, for example.

When a team needs Power BI certification, and when it does not

The certificate earns its cost when it has an audience: a client or tender that asks for named certified staff, a consulting or IT-services role where the credential is part of how the firm is sold, or an internal career framework that recognises it. It is also a reasonable personal goal for the analyst who will own the organisation’s Power BI estate.

For most business teams the need is different. The finance, sales-operations or HR team that has to produce a reliable monthly report needs the skills applied to its own data, and a certificate adds little to that. A sensible pattern is to train the team on its real reporting, then support one or two people who want the credential to sit the exam.

Questions

›How long is the Power BI certification valid?

Twelve months. Microsoft lets holders renew free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn during the six months before it expires; each pass extends it by a year.

›Can the PL-300 exam be taken from home in Malaysia?

Microsoft’s scheduling page says candidates can in most cases choose an online proctored exam or a test centre, with the online option depending on the candidate’s computer passing Pearson VUE’s system check. If no online option appears when booking, it is not available from the exam provider for that exam.

›How much does the PL-300 exam cost in Malaysia?

Microsoft sets the price by the country where the exam is proctored and displays it when you book. We have not quoted it here because we did not read the Malaysian figure on Microsoft’s page; check the booking page for the current amount.

›Can HRDF pay for the exam?

The course fee and the exam are separate purchases. Whether an exam fee can form part of a claim depends on the scheme and how the programme is registered, and HRDF’s pages we read do not settle it for this exam, so confirm with HRDF before assuming it.

›Is PL-300 hard for someone who uses Power BI every day?

Daily use covers a lot of it, but the skills outline is broad, and most people use a fraction of Power BI at work. Microsoft’s free practice assessment is the quickest way to find the gaps before paying for the exam.
